Prior to becoming a Congresswoman, Katie spent her career fighting special interests that dominate American politics at the expense of working families. She is a nationally-renowned consumer advocate/finance expert who held Wall Street banks accountable for ripping off California consumers and homeowners during the financial crisis, as well as helped these families get back on their feet. She also helped Congress pass the Credit Card Act, which enacted federal protections from abusive credit card fees. Katie also worked as a UC-Irvine Law professor. In Congress, Katie fights to reduce the influence of dark money in politics, introduce bipartisan legislation to allow families to set aside more pre-tax income for dependent care, and repeal the limits of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction.
On healthcare . . .
On her website, Representative Porter writes, “healthcare is a human right. That is why I will fight for a Medicare for All system and will stand up to Trump’s effort to gut protections for pre-existing conditions. No American should ever go bankrupt due to healthcare costs.”
On the environment . . .
Per her campaign website, Representative Porter shares her belief that the local "community values the environment and deserves a champion for our air, water, and beaches, not another vote for big oil. We must preserve this planet for our kids and the generations to come.” Katie voted in favor of the Climate Action Now Act, and introduced the Clean Corridors Act of 2019, which establishes a grant program for the installation of electric and hydrogen fueling stations on our national highways.
Plans for Economy
Rep. Porter writes that she "will fight to overturn Trump's tax plan which raised taxes on middle-class families, slashed funding for Medicare and increased our nation’s debt. I believe that what Americans need is tax reform that makes wealthy corporations pay their fair share and cuts taxes for the middle-class and small businesses.” Representative Porter has also been a leader in Congress for promoting clean energy infrastructure, particularly infrastructure that withstands natural disasters.
Katie "believes that quality public education is the bedrock of the American dream. [She] supports investment in public education, expanding early childhood education and making college more affordable so that every student who works hard can graduate from California's great public colleges and universities debt-free.” In Congress, Katie has introduced the CFPB Student Loan and Transparency Act, the Student Mental Health Rights Act, and co-founded the College Affordability Caucus.
