Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez serves as the U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district. Alexandria made waves when she defeated Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, in the 2018 midterm elections. She then defeated Republican opponent Anthony Pappas in the 2018 general election, making her the youngest woman to ever serve in Congress at 29 years old. Alexandria is one of the first female members of the Democratic Socialists of America elected to serve in Congress. She advocates a progressive platform that includes Medicare for All, a federal jobs guarantee, the Green New Deal, abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and free public college and trade school.
On healthcare . . .
Alexandria believes that no one should be without healthcare in the world’s richest country, which is why she is a strong supporter of Medicare for All, which would provide residents with high quality, consistent, and reliable healthcare. Alexandria also believes that all people have a right to safe and affordable prescription medications, and has helped make a generic version of an HIV prevention drug known as Truvada available a year earlier than planned.
On the environment . . .
Alexandria made headlines when she introduced the Green New Deal Resolution to bring attention to the severity of our current climate crisis and provide a roadmap to evaluate policies that can protect our planet and uplift our communities. The Green New Deal provides a comprehensive and ambitious plan to, “combat climate change by creating millions of high-wage jobs in new green industries, transition our energy system and building new infrastructure. It consists of five Green New Deal goals, fourteen mobilization projects, and fifteen guiding principles.”
Plans for Economy
Alexandria is fighting for a more equal economic playing field, as she believes that one one should be too poor to live a fulfilling life. To help support this, Alexandria strongly believes in implementing a wealth tax, union rights, and pay equity in America. She also introduced the Loan Shark Prevention Act, which would establish a 15% cap on interest rates for all loans, including credit cards, payday lenders, and title loans.
Alexandria believes that all youth and adults should have access to quality education no matter their socioeconomic status. She also understands the severity of the student loan debt crisis, which is why she supports the Student Debt Cancellation Act of 2019, which would forgive outstanding federal and private student loans of all previous and current students in our education system.
