Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez is currently serving her fourteenth term as Representative for New York’s 7th Congressional District. In the 116th Congress, she is the Chairwoman of the House Small Business Committee, a senior member of the Financial Services Committee and a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources. Nydia was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico and was the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992. In 1998, she was named Ranking Democratic Member of the House Small Business Committee, making her the first Hispanic woman to serve as Ranking Member of a full House committee. In 2006, she was named Chairwoman of the House Small Business Committee, making her the first Latina to chair a full Congressional committee.

Nydia believes that it is unacceptable for the United States to be one of the only countries in the world without a universal healthcare system for its citizens. Nydia is a huge supporter and co-sponsor of Medicare-for-all, which will ensure that every American has access to quality healthcare and prescription drugs at an affordable cost. She has voted against every attempt by the Republican party to repeal the Affordable Care Act and will continue to ensure that healthcare be treated as a fundamental human right.

Nydia recognizes the importance of keeping our environment clean and the challenges that are presented with the ever growing climate change crisis. As the top Democrat on the Small Business Committee, Nydia has supported policies to allow entrepreneurs to act as leaders in the green energy revolution, which enables the development and adoption of cleaner energy sources to help slow climate change. She has also endorsed the Green New Deal, a forward thinking plan to strengthen our economy, address climate change, and tackle income inequality through public investments renewable energy.
