Alma is a tireless advocate of public education and policies that support her constituents regardless of the background they come from. After working as a public school educator throughout her career, she got her first taste of politics on the School Board and next in the City Council, where she led affordable housing initiatives and neighborhood revitalization programs. In 1994, Alma was elected to the General Assembly and fought to increase minimum wage, strengthen laws against domestic violence, improve adolescent pregnancy programs, and affordable healthcare for seniors and children.
In 2014, Alma won a special election for North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District to fill the remaining term of Representative Mel Watt and has earned statewide recognition as a champion for the middle class, even in the ugly face of Republican opposition.
On healthcare . . .
“Everyone should have access to affordable, quality health care. The Affordable Care Act has moved us further in that direction.” Alma understands that preventative care services are vital to maintaining our health and supports a no-copay policy for regular preventative care services such as routine check-ups. She is also in favor of prohibiting companies from denying coverage due to preexisting conditions. Additionally, she supports increased access to women’s health clinics and is committed to implementing these ideas in affordable and accessible ways.
On the environment . . .
“Alma Adams received the highest grade of 100 from the League of Conservation Voters in their most recent legislative score card. Alma will always work to protect our land and water resources. We must do more to combat climate change. [She’ll] support investing in more renewable energy sources and green technology. We can even create new jobs while taking steps to protect our environment.”
Plans for Economy
“We must invest in public education and job training programs so businesses can hire a skilled work force. We must also invest in our infrastructure which would put Americans back to work building highways, bridges, railways, and ports that are critical in a global economy.”
“Alma has always been a strong advocate for the middle class. A strong middle class means a stronger American economy. She supports giving more tax cuts to the middle class and raising the minimum wage – indexing it to the rate of inflation.”
“Alma Adams will always stand up and fight for our public schools. She knows a good public education is an American value, and she will work to provide a good public education for everyone…. In Congress, Alma will work to provide more scholarships and reduce the rates on student loans. She will also help reduce the debt for current and immediate past students who are struggling to pay off their loans.”
