As a lawyer, a mother of two, a breast cancer survivor, and a political activist, Sima understands what it’s like to be a fighter and to advocate for important causes and issues. As a political activist, she worked to elect candidates who shared the same goal as her - to create equal opportunity for all citizens - up and down the ballot in Houston. Sima became a Senior Advisor and Finance Chair to Beto O’Rourke during his historic 2018 U.S. Senate race and has since joined his presidential campaign. With years of experience in nonprofit and philanthropic work, Sima is running for Congress because she believes that Texas deserves leaders that will fight for relevant and pressing issues in a timely and humane manner.
On healthcare . . .
As a breast cancer survivor, Sima understands the difficulties and struggles of having a preexisting condition, making healthcare accessibility and affordability a personal issue for her. She believes that healthcare is a fundamental human right and will strive to ensure that all people have access to high quality healthcare. Sima will fight to reduce high prescription drug costs and support opening Medicare enrollment to any American who chooses it while keeping the existing private options in place for people who would prefer them.
On the environment . . .
Houston experiences floods that are considered to be rare almost once a year, and Sima knows that there needs to be strong leadership in place in order to prepare for and combat the damage that these hurricanes may cause. She also knows that the rising frequency of the hurricanes can be attributed to climate change, and will work in Congress to ensure that climate change is addressed as a wide scale issue.
Plans for Economy
Sima is proud of Houston for being a city full of cutting edge industries and hardworking individuals that will fuel the greater economy into the future. In Congress, she promises work to ensure the economy grows in ways that are fair and sustainable, providing a livable wage, and fully supporting Houston’s role as a world leader in renewable energy. Sima believes that our economy should work for all of us, and will work towards that notion in Congress.
As an immigrant whose parents escaped revolution in Iran to start a new life in America, Sima knows first-hand the power and influence of a quality education. She believes that education powered the success of herself and her family and will work to make sure every student in her community has the opportunity to succeed, that teachers are paid well, that college is affordable, and that student loans don’t burden graduates with crippling debt.
