Mark Your Calendars: Michelle Obama is Coming Out with a Podcast!
Updated: Jul 24
Precious few Americans are more beloved than Michelle Obama, the former First Lady who epitomized the intelligence, class, and grace that Americans deserve to have in the White House. At least, four years ago, I would have said we deserved it. Now, I’m not sure what we deserve, but it certainly isn’t Michelle willingly stepping back into our lives with her first-ever podcast. We're just getting lucky, I guess.
For anyone who hasn’t read Becoming, Michelle’s memoir (and if you haven’t, what have you been doing with your life?!), “The Michelle Obama Podcast” promises to be the closest the public will get to her since her book tour in 2019. This is huge for many reasons, and namely because, as anyone who has read her book will know, Michelle does not naturally gravitate towards the spotlight. She is, however, a natural in the spotlight, which is what made her so successful as a surrogate for her husband during both of his presidential runs and in her policy initiatives as First Lady: Let’s Move!, Joining Forces, Reach Higher, and Let Girls Learn.
One of the reasons I love Michelle is for her stout commitment to call it as she sees it and to embody exactly who she is, which is foremost, as she has said repeatedly over and over in interviews: a mother. Michelle is a classic American success story in so many historic ways, but it’s her holding this particular milestone so dear that makes me think that this podcast will be something truly extraordinary.
Michelle is an uber educated, accomplished, professional woman. The warmth and friendliness she exudes makes her something of an enigma in the public consciousness, because how does one person embody so many characteristics of archetypes that women have always felt they have to choose between? Mother, professional, wife, friend, daughter, public figure… somehow Michelle has successfully navigated all of these labels by wielding “mother” as her chosen social scepter.
I think that’s why I’m so eager to listen to what Michelle has to say on her podcast; it seems like the ideal platform for someone who values the privacy necessary to focus on family first while also wanting to connect with millions of people. And, Michelle is never better than when she’s doing things on her own terms.
According to The Verge, “The Michelle Obama Podcast” will “explore important personal relationships and how they shape people (1)". The line up of potential guests is seemingly endless, and I’m personally extremely curious to see if Michelle brings on political figures to talk about things outside of politics. It would seem that this is a show that could humanize individuals right at the very moment that the political polarization gripping the country is threatening our humanity, and Michelle is nothing if not astute.
Or, maybe it will just be a show about exactly what it says. After all, if Covid-19 has shown us anything, it’s that few things exceed the value of a personal relationship. And if this president is showing us anything, it’s how desperately the country misses Michelle Obama’s influence and leadership.
“The Michelle Obama Podcast” will be released on Spotify July 29, 2020.
