Women on the Issues: Greenfield vs. Ernst for Iowa's Senate Seat

Updated: Jul 31

This November, Iowans will vote for a Senator. Democrat Theresa Greenfield is running against first-term Republican Senator Joni Ernst. Some might say: “Why is this woman trying to take the seat from another woman? Don’t we want more women in office in general?” Well, I urge you to compare these women on various issues facing Americans. Yes, these candidates are both women, but they view society, policy, and politics very differently. Here’s where they stand on key issues.

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

Greenfield

  • Strongly supports women’s right to make their own healthcare decisions (1)

  • Knows all women must have access to safe, high-quality, and affordable healthcare no matter where they live or how much money they have (1)

  • Endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America and EMILY’s List (2)

Ernst

  • Introduced legislation to direct money away from Planned Parenthood to health care providers who will not perform abortions (3)

  • President Trump signed her efforts into law to restore rights to the states to decide the which providers get Title X funds for comprehensive family planning (3)

GUN CONTROL

Greenfield

  • Sees gun violence as a public safety crisis and wants to fight for legislation that keeps our children and communities safe (4)

  • Will fight to expand background checks, fund gun violence research, and keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and other criminals (4)

Ernst

  • A self-proclaimed “staunch defender of the Second Amendment” and opposes all government efforts to infringe on the right to bear arms (5)

  • Does not believe in stricter gun control and worked to reverse President Obama’s ban on M855 ammunition (5)

ENVIRONMENT

Greenfield

  • Will fight for clean energy jobs and focus on protecting Iowans from the effects of climate change (6)

  • Believes in defending and strengthening environmental protection laws that are under attack from special interests (6)

  • Endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund (7)

Ernst

  • Supports an “all-of-the-above energy approach,” which includes continuing to use fossil fuels while exploring renewable energy further (8)

  • Pro-Keystone XL Pipeline and pleased that President Trump took executive actions to resume construction (8)

IMMIGRATION

Greenfield

  • Wants to work to reform the broken immigration system and create a plan that is fair to Americans and immigrants and rooted in practical solutions (9)

  • Supports the DREAM Act and a focus on keeping families together (9)

Ernst

  • Wants to secure the southern border and give the military the tools they need to protect Americans from external threats (10)

  • Believes in enforcing strict immigration laws and supports blocking executive amnesty and sanctuary cities (10)

LGTBQ+ EQUALITY

Greenfield

  • Committed to supporting the Equality Act as a Senator (11)

  • Proud to stand with the LGTBQ+ community and work toward equal rights for all (11)

  • Endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign (12)

Ernst

  • After the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, she said “marriage is between one man and one woman” and she was “disappointed in the Supreme Court’s decision” (13)

  • Does not think the Pentagon should fund gender reassignment surgeries, but does oppose President Trump’s ban on transgender troops (14)

So, there it is in bullet points. On issues that are important to so many, Theresa Greenfield views solutions much differently than Joni Ernst does. It’s crucial to look at a candidate's beliefs and plans when deciding who to vote for in each election. In the case of Iowa’s 2020 Senate race, it’s not a woman vs. another woman of a different party. It’s Greenfield and what she values vs. Ernst and what she values. You should vote based on which woman, truly, most closely embodies your values.
